Carrier Class Wi-Fi Calling

In 2020 50% of voice calls will occur over Wi-Fi.  Wi-Fi is the best choice for multifamily in-building voice networks.  Residents make calls over Wi-Fi the same way they would over cellular.  Wi-Fi voice coverage is clear, reliable and inexpensive for the building owner.

When it comes to voice, not all Wi-Fi is created equal

Wi-Fi is the least expensive and most comprehensive solution for providing multifamly properties with in-building voice coverage.  To use Wi-Fi as an in-building voice solution for multifamily properties, the network needs to ensure a consistently reliable connection.  Unlike data, which can survive buffering, if there is a break in connection, a voice call will drop.  Spot On uses it’s patented Tessellated Grid Design to ensure consistent and protected connectivity allowing for a reliable in-building voice solution.

Wi-Fi Calling – The Ideal Voice Solution for Multifamily

Over 50% of voice calls originate over Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the perfect solution for in-building voice – it is cost effective for building owners, quick to deploy, provides reliable voice coverage and high speed Wi-Fi internet!  Wi-Fi is the most request amenity by today’s residents and Spot On Wi-Fi solves the in-building cellular coverage problem!

To use Wi-Fi Calling as an in-building wireless solution, building owners need to procure a managed Wi-Fi internet service provider to ensure that voice traffic is consistent and prioritized.  A Spot On Wi-Fi Calling network uses QoS (Quality of Service) and VPP (Voice Packet Prioritization) to manage the voice communications so residents have consistent and reliable coverage.

How does Wi-Fi Calling work?

Residents make calls the same way that they do over cellular – there is no difference to the resident.  In fact, surveys done of residents show that they often don’t even know what network they are using – they just care that it works!  Spot On Wi-Fi Calling provides coverage throughout the entire property so that residents have voice coverage on their smartphones wherever they are.

Will 5G solve our in-building cellular coverage issues?

No, in fact if your property has 4G/LTE coverage issues inside, the likely hood is that the problem will worsen with the deployment of 5G because it operates at a lower frequency.  The good news is that now the cellular and Wi-Fi industries are finally working together to compliment each other – cellular on the outside, Wi-Fi on the inside!

What Does Wi-Fi Cost to Deploy?

Wi-Fi is the most cost effective voice solution for multifamily buildings and also the most versatile.  The average cost to deploy Wi-Fi in a MDU/MTU is $0.40/ sq. ft., often 1/5 of the cost to deploy a traditional DAS.

Do Residents Have To "Log On" to Make/ Receive Calls?

No.  Residents need to associate their device with your property’s Spot On Wi-Fi network one time only and then they are ready to make and receive calls over Spot On’s Wi-Fi.  After associating their device, residents will make and receive voice calls the same way they do over cellular networks.  In fact, the majority of our users do not even know when they are making calls over Wi-Fi.

Can Residents Move Between Spot On Wi-Fi & Cellular?

Yes, when using Spot On Wi-Fi residents will not drop voice calls when leaving the cellular network or going onto the cellular network.  This technology is here to stay too, WiFi6 and 5G are being built with compatibility in mind so that hand-offs will only continue to improve.

Is Wi-Fi As Reliable As Cellular?

Yes.  Wi-Fi technology was made for in-building voice and data traffic. In many cases voice calls are clearer and more reliable than cellular when making calls over a Wi-Fi network installed with Tessellated Grid design.  Tessellated Grid design ensures the connectivity and priority of voice traffic so that calls do not drop.

What Are Differences Between Wi-Fi Calling, CellBoost and DAS?
  • Wi-Fi Calling refers to making voice calls over a Wi-Fi network.  This technology is ideal for multifamily properties and is the most cost effective in-building voice solution
  • CellBoost is a cellular booster/ passive distributed antenna system that utilizes a donor antenna to bring cellular coverage that is present outside a building, inside of the building.  CellBoost is best for commercial properties, hotels and mixed use installations.
  • DAS stands for Distributed Antenna System.  A traditional DAS uses a base station transciever to essentially turn a building into a mini cell site.  This is a very expensive technology and was developed for extremely high capacity deployments where the end users are primarily guests – like stadiums and arenas.
How Much Does Wi-Fi Calling Cost To Install?

Spot On’s Wi-Fi Calling network run about $0.40/ per square foot and include high speed internet access and backbone for IoT.

Does My Property Need to Have 2 Different Networks for Internet & Voice Service?

No – we believe that one physical network should handle all of your wireless needs!  When you install Spot On Wi-Fi at your property, your network supports voice, internet and IoT traffic.  We customize the network design to the needs of your property.

We Want to Install Wi-Fi Calling But Are Not Allowed To Provide Bulk Internet Services?

You can still install a Wi-Fi network.  For properties that are prevented from offering free Wi-Fi, the Spot On solution still works.  We have the ability to separate the voice network, the residential data network and the amenity are network.  Residents get free voice coverage and free amenity area coverage with the low-cost option to subscribe for Wi-Fi data, should they chose.  The best part: we share the revenue with the property!

Which Voice Solution Is Right for My Property?

If your property needs a voice solution, we recommend you contact us to discuss the specific needs of your property.  Choosing the right voice solution ro installation type can depend on many factors:

  • Property-type/ size
  • What kind of coverage is available outside
  • Where the cellular frequency needs are in the building or if the whole building is a dead zone
  • Who the end users are – residents, guests, commercial tenants, etc.
  • Is data also required

Spot On will conduct and exhaustive site survey of your property to determine coverage requirements.

Will Residents Drop Calls When Roaming Throughout Our Property?

No.  Spot On Networks uses Tessellated Grid Design to ensure reliable coverage and seamless roaming throughout the entire property.

Will 5G Fix Our In-Building Voice Problem?

NO, in fact it may make it worse.  If cellular frequencies cannot penetrate your building construction materials, 5G will also be able to penetrate.  5G is also at a lower frequency, so penetration may be even worse.

What is Tessellated Grid Design

Tessellated Grid Design is our patented network architecture relating to access point placement.  Tessellated Grid ensures that devices always have a consistent connection so that voice calls to not drop.  Unlike auto channelization where signal can be reduced when moving around, Tessellated Grid makes sure that smartphones are never without full signal.
